Saint Bodhi

L.A. rapper/singer Saint Bodhi channels her harsh upbringing into cutting, evocative bars with a smooth, old-school feel. Born and raised in South Central L.A., Bodhi was the daughter of a violent gang member. Growing up in a harsh and dangerous environment, she hustled drugs and was once stabbed with a letter opener by a rival. She turned to music as an escape, inspired by classic soul figures like Nina Simone and Eartha Kitt, but also by alternative rock and gothic metal. She wrote poetry and, later, songs, and eventually broke into the industry as a songwriter, penning lyrics for a host of high-profile stars including Beyoncé, A$AP Rocky, Jaden Smith, and Erykah Badu. Her work took her to Atlanta and New York, where she absorbed the sounds of the local scenes and incorporated them into her work. In the late 2010s, Bodhi decided to launch herself as a solo artist, taking her stage name from a duplicitous ex and the tree under which the Buddha found enlightenment. A brief bidding war erupted, at the end of which she was signed to Def Jam. At her very first studio session, she met producer J. Lbs, a fellow South Central native with whom she immediately clicked; he would go on to oversee much of her early output. Her 2019 debut single, "Flower Child," took a raw and unvarnished look back at her childhood, set to a smooth, old-school beat. It was followed by "Blessed," "Gold Revolver," and "Bad Mood," and all four singles appeared on her 2020 debut album, Mad World.
