MBNEL

A California rapper of Filipino descent, MBnel delivers a calm and confident flow, steeped in authentic tales of day-to-day life in his home city of Stockton. A handful of early EPs, mixtapes, and collaborations led to success for his 2018 track "In My City," which garnered multi-million streams before he properly displayed his versatility on the 2019 album Born to Win. He followed that prolific and prestigious year with the Child of the Trenches project, issued in two volumes, before 2021 brought the reflective, autobiographical album No Hard Feelings. Born Jhonel Dongon, in the early '90s -- shortly after his parents had emigrated from the city of Cebu and the island village of Siquijor in the Philippines -- he initially lived with them, along with extended family, in the 8th Street area of Stockton. His family soon got their own place and Dongon's first experience with music came from watching his father DJ with rudimentary equipment. At school he wrote rap lyrics, capturing his material with a games console microphone. Introspective in character, Dongon shied away from the upbeat hyphy sound that was birthed years earlier in nearby Oakland, preferring to aim for a laidback take on the sound of artists such as Lil Wayne and Nipsey Hussle. The suffix of his MBnel moniker derives from the end of his given name, while the "MB" prefix is a reference to Muddy Boyz, the subsection of the Crip gang of which he is a member. MBnel's first single to be accompanied by a professional music video was August 2017's "Diamonds Freestyle". Early the following year, a version of the track appeared on his debut EP Forever. Two further releases followed in quick succession -- the Deeper Than Rap mixtape and a collaborative EP with Juliano Santiago -- before "In My City" significantly raised his profile. It was subsequently tacked onto the end of a revamped, deluxe edition of Forever, issued that May, and he rounded out the year with another mixtape, November's Lifestyle. 2019 was a particularly prolific year for the rapper as it saw him issue two EPs, the Misunderstood mixtape, and a whole host of joint singles with artists such as Bee Boie, Shotta Locc, and Glasses Malone. It also brought the release of Born to Win, a set that was marketed in some circles as his debut album, despite the plethora of long-form sets available under his name by this point. The record contained "Dear Jhené" -- a track dedicated to his newly born daughter -- and saw him crank up the production value a few notches. After 2020's Child of the Trenches EPs came two standalone singles -- "Heart" and "I Know, Pt. 2" -- before No Hard Feelings appeared in May 2021, providing further evidence of his productive nature.
