Jared James Nichols

Wisconsin guitarist Jared James Nichols plays stripped-back, '70s-style, hard-rocking blues with his eponymous power trio. Born in 1989 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and brought up in nearby East Troy, Nichols was initially inspired, like many blues guitarists, by Stevie Ray Vaughan (who coincidentally played his final show before his fatal plane crash in Nichols' hometown). In his late teens he started trying to find his own style and eventually incorporated more hard rock influences, ending up with a sound that was often compared to Cream or Mountain. Nichols moved to L.A. in 2010 at the age of 21 and soon formed his own trio with bassist Diego Edsel and drummer Dennis Holm. Lauded by the classic rock press for his accomplished playing and soulful vocals, he won a number of awards, played at several blues festivals, and went on to tour internationally with big-name acts like Blue Öyster Cult, Saxon, and Zakk Wylde. Later he moved to Nashville. Eschewing a pick or even a tuner, Nichols played a customized vintage guitar with a single pickup and used just one pedal. By stripping back his playing to the bare essentials, he strove to truly express himself and his personality through his instrument. Despite breaking his arm in 2022 and requiring surgery, he bounced back and was on-stage playing again within just two weeks, attributing his swift recovery to his intensive fitness regimen. Nichols released his debut album, Old Glory & Wild Revival, in 2015 through Listenable Records, a label better known for extreme metal. It was followed by 2017's Black Magic. His third, self-titled album appeared in 2023 on Black Hill Records and came the closest to capturing his acclaimed live sound in the studio.
