Diana Baroni
Flutist Diana Baroni focuses on Baroque music. She also performs traditional South American music as a vocalist, focusing on music with African roots.
Baroni was born in the late '60s in Rosario, Argentina. As a schoolchild, she became interested in music and took Orff Schulwerk lessons, playing guitar, piano, flute, and voice. She mastered the Orff method and was teaching younger children by the time she was 14. At that age, she decided to focus on the flute exclusively and made rapid progress. In 1985, at 17, she was invited to join summer workshops at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland. Back in Argentina at 19, she performed in experimental theater and was a founder of the ensemble Halloween, which specialized in contemporary American music. In the mid-'90s, Baroni decided to move back to Europe, studying at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, where she studied with Jesper Christensen and gave her degree recital in 1998. She went on to the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, studying with Jed Wentz and earning a soloist diploma in 1999.
The following year, Baroni, violinist Pablo Valetti, and harpsichordist Céline Frisch formed the Baroque ensemble Café Zimmermann, which recorded several albums for the Alpha label (including one of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos in 2015) and continues to perform under the direction of Céline Frisch. Baroni made her recording debut as a soloist on the 2002 Alpha album Johannes Mattheson: Der Brauchbare Virtuoso. In Amsterdam, Baroni met harpist Lincoln Almada, who suggested that she try performing traditional South American music as a vocalist. Baroni agreed, and she became specifically interested in Afro-Peruvian music and performed with a group called Sapukai. With that group, she recorded the album Son de los Diablos for Alpha's Chants de la Terre series. Baroni has also collaborated with the Brodsky Quartet, the Alter Quintet, and cellist and kora player Tunde Jegede. She has released several more albums, including Mujeres as a vocalist, in 2023 on the Alpha label.
