Christophe Gaugué

Violist Christophe Gaugué has gained recognition for chamber music performances with Trio Wanderer and for solo work with various orchestras. He has been heard on many recordings and is also an educator of significance. Gaugué was born in Nancy, France, on September 30, 1961. He attended the Conservatoire de Paris (at the time the Conservatoire Nationale Supérieure de Musique, or CNSM), graduating in 1984 with the school's first prizes in both viola and chamber music. Gaugué has divided his time between performing and teaching. He was on the faculty for 12 years at the Conservatoire a Rayonnement Régionale de Paris before joining the CNSM as an assistant professor; he continued to teach there as of the early 2020s. Gaugué has performed solo viola repertory with several major orchestras, playing Berlioz's Harold en Italie with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under the direction of Serge Baudo and on a tour of several German cities in 2007, in concerts conducted by Myung-Whun Chung. He has also been heard at many major French music festivals as a soloist and chamber player. Gaugué has performed solo viola works by Philippe Fénelon, Andréas Fervers, and Igor Stravinsky. Gaugué is often added to the Trio Wanderer when the group expands beyond the repertory of the basic piano trio. Gaugué has been heard on more than 20 recordings, beginning in 1999 with an appearance on the album Shoah, featuring works by Alain Krotenberg. He has recorded with Trio Wanderer and other chamber groups, including the Quatuor Élysée on a 2012 album of youthful chamber music by Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. Gaugué performed Fervers' Paronomases on an Accord album devoted to that composer's works. In 2020, he joined Trio Wanderer on a Harmonia Mundi album of chamber music by Shostakovich; the same ensemble returned in 2021 with an album of the complete trios, quartets, and quintet of Robert Schumann.
