Redi Hasa

Redi Hasa is a cellist and composer from Albania. Noted for his signature "singing cello" sound, he is a high-profile member of composer Ludovico Einaudi's globally acclaimed studio and touring groups. Before that he served as a cellist with Daniele Durante's Orchestra La Notte Della Taranta. In addition, Hasa has made dozens of recorded appearances with artists ranging from Vito De Lorenzi to Robert Plant. In 2014, he cut Ura, the first of two co-billed albums with Southern Italy's most revered folk singer, Maria Mazzotta; they collaborated again on 2017's Novilunio. In 2020, Hasa issued his debut solo offering, The Stolen Cello. Hasa was born in Tirana, Albania, in 1977. His mother was a cello teacher and his father a choreographer. He began formal cello studies at age seven, and had learned the classical cello repertoire by 13, performing on an instrument owned by the state's music academy. At 20 years old, while he was enrolled at Tirana Conservatory, local and regional conflicts that had begun after the fall of the Berlin Wall turned into a full-blown civil war. Hasa's older brother encouraged him to flee the country and start anew. He graduated from the conservatory and emigrated to Italy, arriving at the port of Bari in Southern Italy a refugee unable to speak the local dialect. Apart from the clothes on his back, the only item in his possession was the music academy's cello -- he had stolen it in desperation, thinking it the only material item that could help him survive. His talent on the instrument won him a scholarship to continue his music studies in Italy. Hasa played music whenever and wherever possible. He made his living working as a studio musician and live sideman, garnering credits on dozens of recordings beginning with Xanti Yaca's A Sud Di Niente and Zoè's Miracolo. The cellist joined Notte Della Taranta Orchestra in 2008, but continued his studio work. In 2012, after hearing him with the Taranta group, Einaudi invited Hasa to join his chamber group to play alongside violinist/violist Federico Mecozzi. His first appearance with the composer was on 2013's In a Time Lapse. The following year, Hasa made his own recording debut with Ura, a co-billed offering in collaboration with renowned Southern Italian folk singer Maria Mazzotta. The pair toured together, and Hasa's electrifying stage presence also netted him collaborative appearances with Kocani Orkestar, Boban Markovic, Bobby McFerrin, and Paolo Fresu, to name a few. In 2015, Hasa played on Einaudi's Elements, and on its subsequent world tour. Two years later, the cellist signed to the composer's Ponderosa Music & Art label, and reunited with Mazzotta for their second collaboration, Novilunio. The pair played live together whenever their busy schedules allowed. In the aftermath, Hasa received an invitation from Robert Plant to work with him in the studio for the album that became Carry Fire. In 2019, Hasa returned to work with Einaudi, performing on the mammoth, landmark, chart-topping Seven Days Walking and tour. The team that signed Einaudi to Decca also inked Hasa to a solo deal in late 2019. In September of the following year, he released his debut, The Stolen Cello. He used overdubbed cellos to reveal his autobiographical tale of living during, and living through, the escalation of the Albanian conflict, to exile with the stolen cello (used on the recording), and his new life in Italy.
