Révélée en 2012 avec un premier album classé numéro cinq des ventes et nommé au Mercury Prize (Devotion), la chanteuse britannique Jessie Ware a su se faire apprécier du public, qu'elle a fidélisé avec les recueils suivants Tough Love (2014) puis Glasshouse (2017), après trois ans d'absence. Trois nouvelles années plus tard, l'ancienne journaliste devenue choriste puis chanteuse se lance dans un bel exercice de style avec ce quatrième volume à l'intitulé interrogatif : What's Your Pleasure?

La réponse ne se fait pas attendre car dès le premier titre « Spotlight », l'un des cinq singles lancés avant la sortie de l'album, c'est à un étonnant retour vers le futur que convie Jessie Ware, délaissant ses habitudes electro-pop pour raviver tout ce qui a fait le charme du disco, au tournant des années 1980. Un son de basse au premier plan, un chant éthéré et des choeurs suaves conduisent le morceau, à l'instar des onze autres pièces.

S'il n'est pas produit par Giorgio Moroder mais une jeune équipe comprenant en tête James Ford, ainsi que Benji B, Joseph Mount, Kindness et Midland, What's Your Pleasure? en a toutes les qualités avec ce travail sur les sonorités d'époque, la bonne tenue générale des compositions et la voix adéquate d'une interprète qui a tout co-écrit, même si « Mirage (Don't Stop) » comprend des bribes du « Cruel Summer » de Bananarama.

Premier extrait à paraître du lot, « Adore You » est un single efficace et charmeur, avec un arrière-plan minimaliste pour accompagner le chant éthéré de Jessie Ware, qui n'est pas Donna Summer mais se laisse aller à des vocalises et des refrains capiteux. Plus musclé, « Ooh La La » possède aussi cet air mutin, entouré de clochettes, de guitares et de synthés disco-rock, tandis que « Soul Control » verse dans un environnement funk synthétique et « Save a Kiss » prend des couleurs Hi-NRG. Un zeste d'italo-disco se fait également entendre pour parfaire la panoplie d'un album rétro, sans une once de nostalgie.

Un son de basse au premier plan, un chant éthéré et des choeurs suaves conduisent le morceau, à l'instar des onze autres pièces.

S'il n'est pas produit par Giorgio Moroder mais une jeune équipe comprenant en tête James Ford, ainsi que Benji B, Joseph Mount, Kindness et Midland, What's Your Pleasure? en a toutes les qualités avec ce travail sur les sonorités d'époque, la bonne tenue générale des compositions et la voix adéquate d'une interprète qui a tout co-écrit, même si « Mirage (Don't Stop) » comprend des bribes du « Cruel Summer » de Bananarama.

Premier extrait à paraître du lot, « Adore You » est un single efficace et charmeur, avec un arrière-plan minimaliste pour accompagner le chant éthéré de Jessie Ware, qui n'est pas Donna Summer mais se laisse aller à des vocalises et des refrains capiteux. Plus musclé, « Ooh La La » possède aussi cet air mutin, entouré de clochettes, de guitares et de synthés disco-rock, tandis que « Soul Control » verse dans un environnement funk synthétique et « Save a Kiss » prend des couleurs Hi-NRG. Un zeste d'italo-disco se fait également entendre pour parfaire la panoplie d'un album rétro, sans une once de nostalgie.

Un nouveau monde entre électro et classique

Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama… Depuis quelques années, tous ces noms en vogue ont été regroupés sous la vaste et imprécise étiquette “néoclassique”. A dire vrai, cette “scène” ressemble plutôt à une bande hétéroclite d’artistes fureteurs qui mêlent instruments classiques et production électronique – avec une connexion assumée aux pionniers du minimalisme américain – régalant les sens et ouvrant des perspectives des deux côtés de leur spectre musical.

Boris Vian, la zizique avant tout

Boris Vian n’a pas seulement donné son nom à des établissements scolaires et des médiathèques. Il fut un artiste et créateur quasi complet, et la musique, qu’il composait, produisait, écrivait et parfois chantait, a rythmé sa vie fulgurante, conclue à l’âge de 39 ans dans une salle de cinéma en 1959. Fleetwood Mac, la période blues

Il y a deux Fleetwood Mac, celui des années 1960 aux couleurs blues porté par l’un des plus grands guitaristes de sa génération, Peter Green, et l’autre, un groupe de pop-rock qui deviendra l’une des formations les plus acclamées de son époque. Leur album de 1977, “Rumours”, reste, quarante ans après, l’une des dix meilleures ventes de tous les temps. Mais la première période du groupe, moins connue, fut tout aussi captivante.
