Si le titre du quatrième album de Missy Elliott reprend le vocabulaire du bâtiment (Under Construction), c’est sans doute moins pour s’excuser par avance d’une quelconque défaillance ou vice caché (le vice, d’ailleurs, ne reste jamais caché très longtemps chez Missy Elliott, comme le prouve, au hasard, la moite ballade « Pussycat ») qu’en référence à la manière dont le disque est construit : des fondations solides, mais une architecture moderne et audacieuse.
Les fondations, ce sont bien sûr ces multiples clins d’œil aux débuts du hip hop, évoqués ici aussi bien dans la forme (les samples de Frankie Smith ou de Run DMC) que dans le fond (« Back In The Day », ode à l’esprit des pionniers et au bon vieux temps).
La solidité de cette base permet aux architectes d’imaginer les constructions les plus audacieuses dans les étages supérieurs : sonorités saturées, breaks en rafale, percussions discrètes (« Go To The Floor », une entrée en matière qui, d’emblée, envoie effectivement au tapis), groove sale et textes salaces (« Work It »), voix affolées et samples d’origine inconnue (« Gossip Folks »)… Pas de doute : nous sommes bien ici dans une production signée Timbaland, et celui-ci ne s’est visiblement pas assagi avec le temps.
Les pieds dans la tradition, mais la tête dans les étoiles : c’est dans ce mélange de classicisme et de modernité, bien mieux dosé que sur Miss E… So Addictive, que réside la force de Under Construction. Résultat : si l’album n’évite pas toujours redites et longueurs (une petite baisse de régime à mi-parcours, assez peu étonnante sur un album d’une heure), il n’en reste pas moins, aujourd’hui encore, le disque le plus équilibré de Missy Elliott.
