Kendrick Lamar n’est pas juste l’auteur du chef d’œuvre good kid, m.A.A.d city paru en 2012. Non, le Californien est simplement le rappeur le plus important de sa génération. Haut la main même ! Rares sont en effet ceux aussi bien vénérés par l’undergound du hip hop que les anciens, les nouveaux mais aussi le grand public. Kendrick est sans doute le seul à réunir tous les suffrages. Tous. Et ce troisième album, To Pimp A Butterfly et son titre clin d’œil au To Kill A Mockingbird de Harper Lee, ne fait que conforter ce roi dans son trône. Un opus d’une densité impressionnante dans le fond comme dans la forme, dans ses productions comme dans ses textes. Un disque à écouter en boucle pour en savourer les centaines de subtilités. Loin d’avoir joué la carte de la facilité en surfant sur le succès de son précédant album, le MC de Compton brasse ici une multitude de styles, parfois même osés. G-funk, jazz, boom bap, nu soul, électro, blaxploitation, funk, P-Funk, dirty South, tout y passe ! Le soul train de Kendrick regarde aussi bien dans le rétroviseur de la Great Black Music que droit devant lui ; dans le turfu comme dirait l’autre… Quant à sa plume, son agilité est elle aussi affolante. Trip introspectif, commentaire sociétal, second degré, parenthèse politique, trait d’humour, prose du bitume ou ego trip, Kendrick Lamar sait et peut tout faire. Côté featurings enfin, c’est là aussi le grand jeu avec des piges du parrain George Clinton, du régional de l’étape Snoop Dogg, de Pharrell ‘Je suis partout’ Williams, de Ronald Isley des Isley Brothers, de Bilal, de la rappeuse Rapsody, du génial saxophoniste Kamasi Washington et même de l’allumé Thundercat ! A se demander si avec cet album, Kendrick Lamar ne livre pas aux années 2010 ce que Nas offrit aux années 90 avec son mythique Illmatic.
