Après son album à succès Heavy Is the Head, en 2019, le rappeur anglais semble avoir trouvé la paix intérieure ; il s’assagit peut-être, se livre certainement. Il emploie la douceur et les arrangements gospel dans un album résolument religieux qui contraste avec ses précédentes sorties. Eduqué dans une “christian house”, il explique avoir trouvé le sens de la prière durant le confinement. Il a des choses à exprimer, à extérioriser. Les longues digressions de piano côtoient sa voix posée, limpide. Il replonge dans son passé et dans ses regrets (Please), demande de l'aide à Dieu sur Holy Spirit. Il s’essaie avec réussite aux ballades amoureuses comme Firebabe, sans oublier son appétence pour les rythmiques nigérianes qui, cette fois, se font discrètes et épurées comme sur le morceau Need You ou le single lover Hide & Seek. Stormzy a bien changé. Une simple parenthèse ? Le titre de son premier album, Gang Signs and Prayer, en disait déjà long sur ses contradictions entre la rue et l'église. En tout cas, ici, il s’offre avec humilité, jusqu’à laisser son ami Sampha chanter un titre en solo accompagné d’un superbe Rhodes Fender sur Sampha’s Plea.
