Un grand album retraçant ces jours grisants de la Soul de la fin des années 60 et du début des années 70. Cette édition élargie de 1972, rééditée en 2007, reprend la compilation This Is Soul du LP vinyle original de 12 titres publiée chez Atlantic Records (Royaume Uni) en mars 1968 — incluant des succès d’Arthur Conley, Aretha Franklin, Ben E. King, Percy Sledge, Solomon Burke…, et quelques autres arrachés au label Stax, signés Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, Carla Thomas. Cette vitrine magistrale destinée aux marchés étrangers était une parfaite illustration du nouveau génie musical des artistes d’outre Atlantique (tous afro-américains) et une véritable démonstration du style “soul” — terme musical assez peu familier à ce moment-là. Les dix-sept titres ajoutés en bonus ont été sélectionnés dans l’esprit “deep soul” de la compilation LP d’origine. (Qobuz / GG)
