Découvert par l’organiste Joey DeFrancesco, qui, le premier, lui donna une visibilité internationale au sein de son orchestre (cf. Trip Mode et Project Freedom) ; adoubé aussitôt par le contrebassiste et arrangeur Christian McBride, qui l’intégra à son trio Tip City le temps d’une tournée et l’invita à enregistrer en leader sur son label Brother Mister Productions le très réussi Vessels of Wood and Earth, Dan Wilson est l’une des grandes révélations de la guitare jazz de ces dernières années. Toujours produit par McBride, Things Eternal reprend les éléments de base de la réussite de l’opus précédent et appuie sa nouvelle renommée.
A la tête d’une petite formation remarquable de cohésion organique (mention spéciale à Glenn Zaleski au Fender Rhodes constamment inventif et élégant), Dan Wilson, à partir d’un répertoire mêlant quelques compositions originales à un patchwork de thèmes rares signés des grandes figures du jazz moderne (McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker) et de chansons puisées dans le champ de la pop et de la soul (les Beatles, Sting, Stevie Wonder), démontre une nouvelle fois la singularité de sa musique actualisant avec beaucoup de fraîcheur le jazz soul des années 60, dont il se réclame l’héritier.
S’inscrivant dans cette tradition de grands guitaristes de jazz, de Wes Montgomery à George Benson via Grant Green et Kenny Burrell, Wilson, avec sa sonorité ronde, chaleureuse, gorgée de soul, et son phrasé délié, très vocal et magnifiquement accentué, délivre une musique aérée, mélodique et animée d’un swing constant.
