Paradoxalement, le principe de la compilation, parfois passablement réducteur, sied à merveille à Solomon Burke, dont la carrière (et les habitudes de consommation de sa période de gloire) s’est jusqu’à très récemment, tournée vers la production de singles, plus performants les uns que les autres.
Seize chansons sont présentées ici, toutes enregistrées entre 1961 et 1968 pour le compte du label Atlantic, et (presque) toutes inscrites dans l’inconscient collectif : du premier succès « Just to Reach (Out of Two Open Arms) » (1961) aux chansons les plus emblématiques : « Cry to Me » (1962) qui servit à la bande musicale du film Dirty Dancing ; ce qu’on doit considérer comme la signature de Burke, « Tonight’s the Night » (1965), et, naturellement, l’immortel « Everybody Needs Somebody to Love » (1964), c’est un menu historique qui nous est donc proposé.
De plus, l’attention mise par ses artisans à ce résumé reste remarquable : les titres – présentés dans l’ordre chronologique – bénéficient des pressages et mixages originaux, ce qui implique une recherche active des masters de l’époque. Enfin, figure en point d’orgue de l’album un « Soul Meeting » enregistré par Arthur Conley, Don Convay, Joe Tex, Ben E. King et Solomon, réunis de façon éphémère sous l’appellation générique de Soul Clan (1968), pour une chanson initialement enregistrée en vue de lever des fonds au bénéfice de la communauté noire.
Historique et excitant : un Very Best of… qui n’usurpe pas son titre.
