Après la mue indie folk inattendue réalisée par Taylor Swift, un autre projet étonnant, mobilisant plusieurs figures de proue de la country pop attire en 2021 la curiosité : l’association entre Jack Ingram, Jon Randall et Miranda Lambert. Cette dernière, qui a l’habitude d’évoluer en trio depuis son association avec Ashley Monroe et Angaleena Presley au sein de Pistol Annies, avait fait une première fois appel à ses partenaires pour la composition de « Tin Man » en 2017. Cette chanson, nommée aux Grammy Awards en 2017, avait permis de révéler un autre visage de la chanteuse, plus authentique, plus intimiste, débarrassé de tous les artifices de studio. C’est exactement dans cet esprit qu’est né The Marfa Tapes.
Les trois artistes avaient pris l’habitude de se retrouver régulièrement pour une escapade dans le désert à Marfa, au Texas, et jouer leurs chansons autour d’un feu de camp. Plutôt que de garder cette parenthèse récréative pour eux, les trois artistes ont décidé de partager cela avec leur public. Enregistrées dans les conditions réelles, sans overdubs en studio d’aucune sorte, les chansons ainsi réunies (une généreuse récolte de quinze chansons) offrent un moment d’une rare intensité et d’une rare intimité. Même les commentaires entre les chansons ont été conservés, comme lorsque Miranda Lambert se plaint que les cordes frisent et que ses camarades la rassurent en lui disant que la prise était géniale. Comble de l’immersion, on entend même la légère brise du désert et le crépitement des flammes toutes proches. De superbes moments hors du temps attendent l’auditeur, depuis la désarmante « Tin Man » jusqu’aux sombres ballades comme « Breaking a Heart » ou « Anchor », en passant par le régressif « Homegrown Tomatoes » ou l’accrocheur « Am I Right or Amarillo ». L'occasion de découvrir ces artistes établis dans une posture beaucoup plus flatteuse que n'importe quelle production studio.
