Plus de huit heures et demie de musique ! Bobbie Gentry méritait bien une célébration aussi maousse, même si sa gloire dura à peine plus d’une décennie. Retirée des affaires au profit d’un anonymat total depuis le début des années 80, cette grande voix des sixties et des seventies est ici luxueusement compilée. Sur 8 disques sont répartis 177 titres : ses six albums studio pour le label Capitol (Ode to Billie Joe de 1967, The Delta Sweete et Local Gentry de 1968, Touch ‘Em With Love de 1969, Fancy de 1970 et Patchwork de 1971), son disque en duo avec Glen Campbell paru en 1968 et – les fans font s’évanouir – plus de 70 inédits mêlant prises alternatives, démos, live à la BBC et raretés en tous genres ! Derrière le mystère de sa retraite prématurée et de ce culte qui ne cessera ne grandir au fil des années, restent ces chansons qu’elle signa de sa main. Bobbie Gentry n’était pas une simple chanteuse mêlant country, folk et pop comme tant d’autres de sa génération. C’est elle seule, au début de sa vingtaine, qui écrira les tubesques Mornin' Glory, Fancy, Okolona River Bottom Band, Chickasaw County Child ou encore le plus célèbre d’entre tous, repris par la terre entière, Ode to Billie Joe, fascinante histoire du suicide mystérieux du jeune Billie Joe McAllister ayant sauté du Tallahatchie Bridge. En France, Joe Dassin chamboulera l’intrigue : Billie Joe s’appelle Marie-Jeanne et le Tallahatchie Bridge devient le pont de la Garonne…


Il y a une classe, un lâcher-prise et une sensualité renversante dans la voix de Bobbie Gentry. Il y a aussi ces arrangements luxuriants et cet instrumentarium en phase avec ce chant, tantôt des cordes lounge un brin kitsch mais tellement classe, tantôt une simple guitare épousant les cambrures de sa voix.
