Ce n’est pas un vain titre que voilà : « les premiers pas vers la gloire », si l’on considère que les trois quarts de ces enregistrements sont le fait d’un jeune homme qui n’a pas encore atteint ou dépassé sa dix-huitième année, tandis que le dernier quart a été enregistré lorsque le petit Daniel (Barenboim) affichait fièrement treize ans… On ne peut qu’être étonné de la maturité dont il fait souvent preuve, même si sa lecture des grands monuments que sont les plus célèbres sonates de Beethoven – dont l’himalayenne 32e – penche parfois un brin du côté de l’aspect virtuose, plutôt que de la profondeur d’analyse architecturale et sonore. Mais le document reste fascinant, soulignant combien dans ses fibres, le Barenboim pianiste est intimement musicien et musical, naturel et sans la moindre inhibition.
