Re-découvert comme tant d’autres vieux bluesmen dans les années 60, Son House fût contemporain de Charley Patton, qui l’aida à obtenir son premier contrat, et lui aussi l’un des premiers musiciens du genre à bénéficier de séances de studio. Après une retraite quasi forçée, encouragé par le grand manager Dick Waterman, il retrouve les studios grâce à l’enthousiasme du directeur artistique et producteur de Columbia, le célèbre John Hammond, et grave ces faces magistrales entre les 12 et 14 avril 1965, soutenu  par l’harmoniciste Alan Wilson bientôt fondateur de Canned Heat*. Il y a conservé un timbre de voix aussi clair qu’à ses débuts discographiques en 1930 et sa guitare entièrement métallique (National steel) est une deuxième voix qui ponctue ses textes évocateurs ; « Preachin’ The Blues » : « Now I met the Blues this morning / Walking just like a man / I said ‘Good morning Blues / Now give me your right hand / …. I had religion, Lord, this very day / But the women and whiskey well / They would not let me pray ». Pédagogue de son art en effet (ses monologues sur la naissance du Blues dans le delta du Mississippi et les plantations du Sud), on lui doit d’autres compositions pleines de ferveur comme « Pony Blues », « Levee Camp Moan » ou « Death Letter Blues » qui égalent son titre fétiche, le Spiritual traditionnel « John The Revelator » (aussi le titre d’un de ses albums).











*Aussi conseillé : Delta Blues and Spirituals capturé en public à Londres en 1970, encore avec Alan Wilson dont c’était le dernier enregistrement avant son suicide moins de deux mois plus tard
