Depuis les années 70, Mark Knopfler s’est taillé une niche pour lui tout seul en tant que compositeur-guitariste original et plébiscité, d’abord avec son groupe Dire Straits, puis comme artiste solo. Ce long recueil rassemble de nombreux incontournables de ces deux phases de la carrière de Knopfler. Avec un picking expert qui fait référence au bluegrass, au jazz, au blues, au rock, le jeu de guitare de Knopfler ne ressemble à aucun autre. Et puis, ses chansons érudites et suggestives et son chant à la Dylan tout en retenue sont loin d’être sans saveur. Entre ses airs les plus connus ("Sultans of Swing", "Money for Nothing") se nichent des joyaux comme "Skateaway", tout en groove, "Your Latest Trick" aux influences jazzy en mode mineur et "Going Home", morceau instrumental.
