Peu célébré sur nos terres gauloises, Little Feat fut une passionnante entreprise prospère d’outre-Atlantique qui fusionnait le blues, le R&B, la country et le rock’n’roll avec une véritable élégance. Une formation hippie qui, bien que toujours plus ou moins en activité, eut sa véritable heure de gloire durant les années 70. Jimmy Page les cita même à l’époque comme son groupe américain préféré ! Little Feat fut lancé en 1969 par deux ex-membres des Mothers of Invention de Frank Zappa, Bill Payne et Lowell George. Ce dernier enregistra cet unique album solo, merveilleux d’un bout à l’autre. Paru en 1979, Thanks, I'll Eat it Here fut un moyen pour son auteur de se démarquer fermement des nouvelles orientations trop jazz-rock à son goût de ses collègues. On retrouve donc ici l’ADN des premiers opus de Little Feat, les meilleurs. Mieux : Lowell George revisite la chanson Two Trains qui figurait sur Dixie Chicken, troisième album de Little Feat paru en 1973 ! Mitonné avec quelques virtuoses et autres requins de studio (Bonnie Raitt, James Newton Howard, Nicky Hopkins, Jim Keltner, David Paich, Jeff Porcaro et même Bill Payne), ce disque solo mêle donc avec virtuosité le R&B de New Orleans, la country soul, le blues en version sophistiquée et la pop nonchalante. Peu de nouvelles compositions ici, trois seulement, Lowell George préférant chanter notamment Allen Toussaint (What Do You Want the Girl to Do), Ann Peebles (et son tubesque Can't Stand The Rain totalement revisité) ou bien encore Rickie Lee Jones (Easy Money). On ne tombe guère amoureux de Thanks, I'll Eat it Here après une simple écoute distraire, non. Il faut donner du temps au temps comme disait l’autre, et se laisser envahir par cette nonchalance sudiste qui ne tranche pas entre les genres musicaux qu’elle évoque et préfère procurer une sensation générale de bien-être… Lowell George fut un musicien loué de tous et lorsqu’il ne turbinait pas pour Little Feat ou pour sa propre taule, allait piger chez ses confrères. On le croisera ainsi sur des albums aussi divers que Paris 1919 de John Cale, Son Of Schmilsson d’Harry Nilsson, Takin' My Time de Bonnie Raitt ou bien encore The Pretender de Jackson Browne. Mais tout ça ne durera pas très longtemps : le 29 juin 1979, alors qu’il vient d’entamer une tournée solo avec ce Thanks, I'll Eat it Here sous le bras, ce junkie invétéré est retrouvé mort dans sa chambre d’hôtel de Washington à seulement 34 ans, d’insuffisance cardiaque selon la police… © MZ/Qobuz
