Comme Jeff Beck avant lui, Slash est un guitariste superstar incapable de chanter trois mots : situation un rien problématique à l'heure d'enregistrer un album solo. Après la déroute de Velvet Revolver, il suit le modèle de l’album Supernatural de Santana, invitant un chanteur différent dans chaque morceau. Là où Supernatural cherchait à amener vers Santana un nouveau public, Slash est destiné à ses anciens fans. Il y invite des vieux de la vieille du rock tels Ozzy, Lemmy et Iggy pour faire le gros du travail et glisse au passage quelques nouvelles figures. On évolue ici sur un terrain familier et confortable, sauf lorsque Fergie pousse Slash dans une direction intéressante, loin de ses sentiers battus.
