Avec sa fidèle rythmique composée du batteur Jeff Ballard et du contrebassiste Larry Grenadier, Brad Mehldau mêle ici trois nouvelles compositions à des reprises de classiques de la pop (Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson), du jazz (Elmo Hope, Sam Rivers) et du Great American Songbook (Almost Like Being in Love). Sans chambouler les valeurs de cette grandiose formation, Seymour Reads the Constitution! est un disque soulignant une fois de plus la forte complicité entre ces protagonistes toujours inspirés dans leurs improvisations comme leurs échanges. Le Blues and Ballads que ces trois-là avaient publié en 2016 était déjà une sorte de sommet, mais cette cuvée 2018 enivre encore plus tant le piano du maître de maison est ici d’une incroyable versatilité et fait résonner mille couleurs. Que le virtuose américain puisse tout jouer, on le savait déjà. Sauf qu’avec Seymour Reads the Constitution!, Mehldau enchaîne les contrepieds, multiplie les clins d’œil, déambule dans l’histoire du piano jazz et trouve toujours la note juste, l’accord parfait pour rendre sa musique attachante, touchante et renversante. Dans sa déjà vaste discographie (certes pas encore aussi étoffée que celle de Keith Jarrett, une de ses grandes influences), cet album occupera, à l’heure des bilans, une place de choix… © Max Dembo/Qobuz
