Qui contemple les quatre de Detroit en plongée sur la photo de pochette ? Berry Gordy, grand patron de label avant l’éternel ? N’allez pas croire : le premier album des Four Tops est très bien aussi mais, il faut bien l’avouer, a pris quelque peu par surprise les amateurs de soul music avec le succès inattendu de « Baby I Need Your Loving ».
Donc, désormais, le quatuor n’avance plus masqué mais bénéficie bien au contraire de l’attention pleine et entière des compositeurs maison, ces Holland-Dozier-Holland qui signent l’intégralité des douze chansons, composant le programme de leur deuxième album.
Le disque bénéficie d’une ouverture en fanfare avec le premier numéro un de l’histoire du groupe (cet « I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) », qui doit si peu à la sophistication de la Motown et tant à la fièvre de la soul music, en particulier grâce à la formidable prestation du leader Levi Stubbs).
Suivent le doux et injustement mésestimé « Something About You » et le nouveau triomphe de « It’s The Same Old Song » (par ici : « C’est la même chanson », à l’aune de l’interprétation hystérique et saccadée de Claude François), qui porte, en essence et sans nul sans doute, le résumé de ce que doit être la chanson populaire de qualité. Qui, ici, atteint naturellement des sommets.
