Qui a besoin de Marillion alors que Genesis est toujours en activité ? Sous la première illustration de pochette, concoctée pour le groupe par le graphiste Mark Wilkinson, et grâce à la première apparition des grands personnages (le bouffon) de l’imaginaire des p’tits gars du Buckinghamshire, c’est, à peu de choses près, le cœur du dilemme, qui bat pour les critiques au sein des six pièces proposées dans ce premier effort.
Ou, plus précisément, qui a besoin des maquillages de Peter Gabriel, et de la voix si caractéristique, de Peter Gabriel, sans Peter Gabriel ? C’est sans nul doute omettre qu’à l’époque, ni Peter Gabriel, ni (encore moins) Genesis, n’étaient plus capables d’enregistrer pareille musique.
De la joyeuse ironie de « Garden Party » (attaque acide de la bourgeoisie londonienne, et de sa fascination pour la Couronne, et ses réceptions), au troublant « He Knows You Know » (ou de l’usage de la drogue, et ses méfaits), l’inspiration de Marillion fait mouche à plusieurs reprises, finalement bien moins encline à l’indulgence qu’on a bien voulu le dire. Le chanteur Fish entraîne toute la bande vers des sommets de lyrisme, et peut alors, tête haute, revendiquer le leadership de la nouvelle vague du rock progressiste britannique.
L’édition originale a été complétée en 1993 par l’adjonction de sept morceaux supplémentaires (démos, versions alternatives différentes, etc…). Script For A Jester’s Tear, entre autres impulsé par le single « Market Square Heroes » envoyé en avant-garde, sera certifié disque de platine, atteindra la septième position des charts britanniques, mais devra se contenter d’une modeste 175ème place des classements américains.
