Pour beaucoup, Pleased to Meet Me est LE grand chef d’œuvre des Replacements. Originaires de Minneapolis, les Mats – comme les surnommaient leurs fans – furent sans aucun doute l’un des groupes les plus essentiels du rock indé d’Outre-Atlantique. Dans ce périmètre, ces chouchous des campus sauveront même la décennie 80. Emmenés par l’un des songwriters les plus doués de sa génération – Paul Westerberg, logiquement vénéré sur ses terres – épaulé dans sa charge par une bande d’énervés plus barges les uns que les autres (Tommy Stinson à la basse, son frère Bob disparu en 1995 à la guitare et Chris Mars à la batterie), les Replacements avaient inventé une version viscéralement punk du rock’n’roll à la Rolling Stones sur des textes narrant, au fil des ans et des albums, plus la frustration que la révolte… Paru en avril 1987, Pleased to Meet Me est d’abord marqué par l’absence de Bob Stinson, viré pour sa surconsommation de drogue et d’alcool. Derrière la console, la bande (réduite) de Westerberg a surtout engagé Jim Dickinson, pianiste/producteur haut en couleurs sur le CV duquel on croise le nom d’Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Big Star, Rolling Stones, Ry Cooder, Cramps, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Flamin' Groovies ou bien encore Primal Scream. Lieu du crime : les mythiques studios Ardent de Memphis, là même où Big Star, le groupe d’Alex Chilton, idole ultime de Paul Westerberg, a enregistré ses trois albums dont Third/Sister Lovers, produit par Dickinson justement. La boucle est bouclée quand on sait que la seconde chanson de Pleased to Meet Me s’intitule justement Alex Chilton.
Avec ce cinquième album, grâce notamment à Dickinson, le punk rock s’estompe dans l’ADN des Mats pour laisser place à davantage de diversité, qu’elle soit soul, folk ou rock, et des instruments inhabituels chez eux (le saxophone sur I Don't Know et Nightclub Jitters, une section de cuivres sur Can't Hardly Wait). Mais le point d’orgue de ce cinquième opus restent les chansons de Westerberg qui fusionnent à la perfection l’énergie juvénile et brute du rock’n’roll, ses thématiques éternelles (frustration ado, rejet de l’establishment, addictions, anxiété et amours déçus) sans tomber dans les clichés, le tout rehaussé par un sens aigu de la mélodie qui tue.
