Avec l’impeccable Same Trailer Different Park qui décrocha, à la surprise générale, le Grammy Award du meilleur album country en 2013, Kacey Musgraves avait évité de tomber dans les pièges tendus par Nashville en devenant une 5473e Taylor Swift insipide, incolore et inodore… Pour son deuxième opus qui parait durant l’été 2015, la Texane poursuit dans une veine similaire. Ainsi, lorsqu’une chanson semble s’engager sur le chemin des clichés du genre, Musgraves donne un gros coup de collier pour faire brillamment vriller la composition. On alterne alors country pure et country pop en passant par des titres nettement plus rock voire un brin rétro avec banjo et pedal steel ou, à l’opposé, violons langoureux. Sans révolutionner le genre, ni faire vaciller Nashville, Pageant Material est un disque joliment troussé, que les écoutes répétées rendent vraiment attachant. © MD/Qobuz

Avec l’impeccable Same Trailer Different Park qui décrocha, à la surprise générale, le Grammy Award du meilleur album country en 2013, Kacey Musgraves avait évité de tomber dans les pièges tendus par Nashville en devenant une 5473e Taylor Swift insipide, incolore et inodore… Pour son deuxième opus qui parait durant l’été 2015, la Texane poursuit dans une veine similaire. Ainsi, lorsqu’une chanson semble s’engager sur le chemin des clichés du genre, Musgraves donne un gros coup de collier pour faire brillamment vriller la composition. On alterne alors country pure et country pop en passant par des titres nettement plus rock voire un brin rétro avec banjo et pedal steel ou, à l’opposé, violons langoureux. Sans révolutionner le genre, ni faire vaciller Nashville, Pageant Material est un disque joliment troussé, que les écoutes répétées rendent vraiment attachant. © MD/Qobuz
