C’est le Brésil qui hante ce troisième album solo de George Michael puisqu’il est dédié à la fois au styliste Anselmo Feleppa (son compagnon brésilien décédé en 1993), ainsi qu’à l’immense compositeur carioca Antonio Carlos Jobim. L’interprète de I Want Your Sex n’a pas pour autant troqué sa pop matinée de soul et R&B avec de la bossa-nova ou de la samba. Certes, les guitares du morceau d’ouverture (Jesus to a Child) possèdent une saveur latino envoûtante, tout comme la rythmique de To Be Forgiven, mais c’est bel et bien la pop qui est le moteur de cet opus profondément sensuel.
On notera toutefois quelques fugaces incursions dans le jazz (le piano et la trompette sourdinée façon film noir dans Older), ainsi que l’apport de timbres plutôt inhabituels chez le chanteur britannique, comme les nappes de cordes. Celles-ci accompagnent notamment la tendre mélodie de You Have Been Loved, ballade écrite en hommage à Feleppa. Sorti en 1996 après plus de cinq années de silence, Older fêtait ses 25 ans d’existence en 2021. Avec une année de retard (pandémie oblige), Sony a décidé de célébrer cet anniversaire en grande pompe, avec une édition expanded comprenant cinq disques. Outre l’album original remastérisé, on retrouvera bien entendu Upper, qui était en quelque sorte la seconde partie de Older, sorti en 1997. Quant aux 3e, 4e et 5e disques, ils comprennent un nombre impressionnant de remix, radio edits et unplugged.
