Petite révolution pour Lady Antebellum : après plus d’une décennie à marcher aux côtés de Capitol Nashville pour le meilleur… et surtout le meilleur, le groupe a choisi de placer son septième opus, Ocean, dans les mains de BMLG (Big Machine Label Group), qui, comme son nom ne l’indique pas, est une maison de disques indépendante. Établie à Nashville comme la formation, elle a notamment vu éclore une certaine Taylor Swift. Cela s’accompagne-t-il d’un changement musical, d’une émancipation artistique de la part du trio mixte ? Pas vraiment.
Ce qui fait le sel de ce groupe, à savoir des harmonies vocales très maîtrisées, des mélodies immédiates satisfaisant autant l’appétit des fans de pop que des amateurs de country, une certaine authenticité sudiste et le romantisme délicat, jamais béat de leurs tubes, est indéniablement au rendez-vous. « What If I Never Get Over You » remplit de ce point de vue toutes les cases et s’impose comme un nouveau tube en puissance. « Pictures » engage l’auditeur sur un rythme un peu plus laidback et plus solaire, avec une ballade mid-tempo sentimentale relevée de plans de guitare ornementaux bien pensés. L’A.D.N. country s’exprime davantage sur « Crazy Love » qui bénéficie d’un violon lancinant et d’un très beau mariage vocal. On s’attardera également sur l’ampleur pop de « Alright » qui saute aux oreilles et pourrait bien partir à l’assaut des charts ou l’emphase de « The Things That Wrecks You » qui voit le groupe rejoint par Little Big Town pour une collaboration au sommet de la country pop.
N’en demeure pas moins une certaine lassitude, du groupe, de l’auditeur ou des deux, au cours de cet objet d’excellente facture, comblant toutes les attentes des fans, mais qui n’ambitionne en aucun cas de faire évoluer la formule musicale d’un iota et reste dans sa zone de confort. Sans prise de risque donc, Ocean prolonge la belle aventure sans autre ambition que de satisfaire les nombreux dans du trio.
