Annoncé comme la 21e référence des « NYAPS » (Neil Young Archives Performance Series), cet album n’a rien d’un fond de tiroir. L’archive est récente : elle compile des enregistrements de la courte tournée européenne de Neil Young en 2019. Deux semaines avant le début de cette tournée, Neil Young avait enterré son vieil ami Elliot Roberts, qui fut son manager pendant cinquante ans. Neil Young voyage avec le portrait d’Elliot Roberts sur l’étui de sa guitare, et la tournée lui est dédiée. Elle n’a rien de triste ni de pathétique, Elliot Roberts aurait sûrement tapé du pied sur le côté de la scène s’il avait été là. Secondé par Promise Of The Real, le groupe aussi électrique qu’éclectique qui l’accompagne souvent depuis 2015 et l’album The Monsanto Years, Neil Young revisite des pans de sa discographie avec une vigueur qui fait plaisir à entendre – les fans iront même au-delà du plaisir avec cette version de On the Beach, que Neil Young joue rarement sur scène et encore plus rarement en groupe. Entre buddy country et rock orageux, larsens et riffs d’harmonica, chansons inoxydables et dérapages incontrôlés, le chanteur et son groupe sont en totale harmonie, aussi subtils sur les ballades que tendus sur les morceaux plus énergiques. On en oublierait presque Crazy Horse, le groupe historique de Neil Young. Entre la publication de ses archives et ses nouveaux enregistrements, ce bon vieux Neil Young a sorti en moyenne au moins deux albums par an depuis quelques années. C’est beaucoup.
