Cinq ans et trois semaines, « one-thousand eight-hundred and fifty-five days ». Voici la période séparant les albums DAMN. et Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers de Kendrick Lamar. Difficile alors d’imaginer le plus grand rappeur de son époque revenir avec simplicité. Ce cinquième album est d’une densité saisissante, tant sur le fond que sur la forme. Il charrie les élévations spirituelles de son auteur, une complexité américaine, encore, ce que cela sous-entend d’être à la fois noir et icône aux Etats-Unis. La production, profondément imprégnée de la patte sonore de Sounwave, est audacieuse, versatile, certainement plus complexe et expérimentale que sur ses précédents albums. Le Californien a décidé d’exprimer ses états d’âme largement explorés sur DAMN. et de les mettre en lien avec la sombre histoire des Etats-Unis exprimée sur To Pimp a Butterfly. Il y a comme un cheminement de la pensée linéaire qui accompagne des moments d’interprétation magnifiques, comme le duo avec Taylour Paige, We Cry Together, dispute de couple violente et incarnée, comme le mélodique Puple Hearts avec Summer Walker et Ghostface Killah, comme cette lecture, calme, du journal intime de sa tante sur Auntie Diaries… Aucun artiste de son label Top Dawg Entertainment n’est présent sur cet album. Kendrick Lamar a préféré laisser une large place à son poulain Baby Keem et au mal-aimé Kodak Black. Ce Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers est tentaculaire, au-dessus de la mêlée. Cinq ans et trois semaines, « one-thousand eight-hundred and fifty-five days ». Voici la période séparant les albums DAMN. et Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers de Kendrick Lamar. Difficile alors d’imaginer le plus grand rappeur de son époque revenir avec simplicité. Ce cinquième album est d’une densité saisissante, tant sur le fond que sur la forme. Il charrie les élévations spirituelles de son auteur, une complexité américaine, encore, ce que cela sous-entend d’être à la fois noir et icône aux Etats-Unis. La production, profondément imprégnée de la patte sonore de Sounwave, est audacieuse, versatile, certainement plus complexe et expérimentale que sur ses précédents albums. Le Californien a décidé d’exprimer ses états d’âme largement explorés sur DAMN. et de les mettre en lien avec la sombre histoire des Etats-Unis exprimée sur To Pimp a Butterfly. Il y a comme un cheminement de la pensée linéaire qui accompagne des moments d’interprétation magnifiques, comme le duo avec Taylour Paige, We Cry Together, dispute de couple violente et incarnée, comme le mélodique Puple Hearts avec Summer Walker et Ghostface Killah, comme cette lecture, calme, du journal intime de sa tante sur Auntie Diaries… Aucun artiste de son label Top Dawg Entertainment n’est présent sur cet album. Kendrick Lamar a préféré laisser une large place à son poulain Baby Keem et au mal-aimé Kodak Black. Ce Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers est tentaculaire, au-dessus de la mêlée. Il contient son lot de violence, de pleurs et d’espoirs, son lot de contradictions et d’errances personnelles. Assurément un grand album. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
