Afin de parfaire l’édification des chères têtes blondes, précisons que 1978 fut une année affriolante pour le renouveau du rock américain, qui, des débuts des Reals Kids à ceux de Willie Loco Alexander, ou des Heartbreakers, justement (et c’est sans compter avec le Cabretta de Mink DeVille, alors que dans la Vieille Europe, Joy Division fourbissait ses armes face aux flacides Scorpions), laissa accroire que certains modestes génies urbains pouvaient conserver la rage punk sans se couper de leurs racines.
Aujourd’hui, le temps a passé (puisque c’est la seule chose qu’il sache faire) et Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers offrent leur douzième album, mettant par là-même un coup d’arrêt à huit ans de silence discographique.

Les intentions du groupe (au casting pratiquement conservé depuis ses tout débuts – Benmont Tench et ses claviers liquides, la guitare prolixe de Mike Campbell, indiscutable patron des sessions -, chose assez rare pour être soulignée) sont clairement affirmées : Mojo (terme légèrement libidineux propre au blues) a été enregistré dans la spontanéité de compères qui se connaissent depuis plus de trente ans et ont eu l’occasion de maintes fois peaufiner ce répertoire sur scène, sans overdubs et dans l’esprit des jams à la virtuosité instrumentale reconnue de The Allman Brothers Band.

Ainsi, des quinze pièces du programme, certaines n’hésitent pas à abriter de longs chorus (généralement de guitare) comme autant de variations d’un thème initialement assez simple, mais toutes se nourrissent d’un blues aux couleurs ambrées par le chaud soleil californien. « Good Enough », en conclusion de programme, reprend ainsi, et brillamment, les choses là où « Ballad of a Thin Man » de Bob Dylan les avaient laissées (la dramaturgie de la section rythmique et l’envol du soliste), et, dans toutes les chansons qui précèdent, on retrouve l’excitation qui fit se rencontrer, sous la plume d’un Dylan composant « Highway 61 Revisited », le folk, la country, le rock et un monde de différences possibles. Du riff à l’harmonica d’un jubilatoire « Jefferson Jericho Blues » en ouverture tonitruante de l’album à la tendresse mélodique de « Something Good Coming », en passant par le dandinement matois de « Candy » (et son définitif et politiquement incorrect I don’t drink Coca-Cola !), l’album provoque l’irrépressible désir de sortir danser dans la rue et d’embrasser son voisin. Ce qui n’est pas très raisonnable, mais on n’est pas là pour cela.

On appelle de nos vœux une prochaine rencontre entre Dylan et ce groupe tranquillement souverain (on se pince même en écoutant « No Reason to Cry », y dénichant quelques absolus prémices). Mais, en attendant, il reste ce formidable Mojo : à 60 ans, Thomas Earl Petty démontre qu’il a toujours la gaule, et pas uniquement pour aller à la pêche.

Chronique

Afin de parfaire l’édification des chères têtes blondes, précisons que 1978 fut une année affriolante pour le renouveau du rock américain, qui, des débuts des Reals Kids à ceux de Willie Loco Alexander, ou des Heartbreakers, justement (et c’est sans compter avec le Cabretta de Mink DeVille, alors que dans la Vieille Europe, Joy Division fourbissait ses armes face aux flacides Scorpions), laissa accroire que certains modestes génies urbains pouvaient conserver la rage punk sans se couper de leurs racines.
Aujourd’hui, le temps a passé (puisque c’est la seule chose qu’il sache faire) et Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers offrent leur douzième album, mettant par là-même un coup d’arrêt à huit ans de silence discographique.

Les intentions du groupe (au casting pratiquement conservé depuis ses tout débuts – Benmont Tench et ses claviers liquides, la guitare prolixe de Mike Campbell, indiscutable patron des sessions -, chose assez rare pour être soulignée) sont clairement affirmées : Mojo (terme légèrement libidineux propre au blues) a été enregistré dans la spontanéité de compères qui se connaissent depuis plus de trente ans et ont eu l’occasion de maintes fois peaufiner ce répertoire sur scène, sans overdubs et dans l’esprit des jams à la virtuosité instrumentale reconnue de The Allman Brothers Band.

Ainsi, des quinze pièces du programme, certaines n’hésitent pas à abriter de longs chorus (généralement de guitare) comme autant de variations d’un thème initialement assez simple, mais toutes se nourrissent d’un blues aux couleurs ambrées par le chaud soleil californien. « Good Enough », en conclusion de programme, reprend ainsi, et brillamment, les choses là où « Ballad of a Thin Man » de Bob Dylan les avaient laissées (la dramaturgie de la section rythmique et l’envol du soliste), et, dans toutes les chansons qui précèdent, on retrouve l’excitation qui fit se rencontrer, sous la plume d’un Dylan composant « Highway 61 Revisited », le folk, la country, le rock et un monde de différences possibles. Du riff à l’harmonica d’un jubilatoire « Jefferson Jericho Blues » en ouverture tonitruante de l’album à la tendresse mélodique de « Something Good Coming », en passant par le dandinement matois de « Candy » (et son définitif et politiquement incorrect I don’t drink Coca-Cola !), l’album provoque l’irrépressible désir de sortir danser dans la rue et d’embrasser son voisin. Ce qui n’est pas très raisonnable, mais on n’est pas là pour cela.

On appelle de nos vœux une prochaine rencontre entre Dylan et ce groupe tranquillement souverain (on se pince même en écoutant « No Reason to Cry », y dénichant quelques absolus prémices). Mais, en attendant, il reste ce formidable Mojo : à 60 ans, Thomas Earl Petty démontre qu’il a toujours la gaule, et pas uniquement pour aller à la pêche.
