Rarement donnée en concert pour des raisons évidentes de coût en raison des huit solistes nécessaires et de l’effectif pléthorique voulu par Mahler pour le chœur et l’orchestre, la Symphonie n° 8 est souvent affublée du surnom de Symphonie des Mille qui fait croire à un monstre musical.
Berliozienne par son ambition démesurée, cette symphonie l’est parfois également dans son propos et dans son orchestration rutilante, surtout avec un chef de la trempe de Yannick Nézet-Seguin qui, outre la puissance, sait privilégier le raffinement, la délicatesse instrumentale, la mesure et la transparence qui se trouvent aussi dans cette monumentale partition.
Il faut dire que le chef canadien est un habitué de cette partition qu’il a dirigée à plusieurs reprises, quatre soirs consécutifs à Philadelphie en mars 2016, mais aussi en Europe à Rotterdam comme à Bruxelles deux ans plus tard. Le présent enregistrement a été capté lors des concerts de Philadelphie qui commémoraient le centenaire de la première américaine de cet ouvrage sous la direction du très jeune Leopold Stokowski, en 1916, précisément dans la même ville et avec le même orchestre.
Bénéficiant des meilleurs solistes du moment, d’un effectif choral de grande qualité et du fameux « Philadelphia sound » de l’orchestre dont il est désormais le titulaire, Nézet-Seguin est à la tête d’un effectif de 400 chanteurs et instrumentistes. Tous ensemble, ils nous offrent une version très éloquente et sans boursouflure d’une œuvre oscillant entre symphonie, grande cantate et oratorio. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Chronique

Rarement donnée en concert pour des raisons évidentes de coût en raison des huit solistes nécessaires et de l’effectif pléthorique voulu par Mahler pour le chœur et l’orchestre, la Symphonie n° 8 est souvent affublée du surnom de Symphonie des Mille qui fait croire à un monstre musical.
Berliozienne par son ambition démesurée, cette symphonie l’est parfois également dans son propos et dans son orchestration rutilante, surtout avec un chef de la trempe de Yannick Nézet-Seguin qui, outre la puissance, sait privilégier le raffinement, la délicatesse instrumentale, la mesure et la transparence qui se trouvent aussi dans cette monumentale partition.
Il faut dire que le chef canadien est un habitué de cette partition qu’il a dirigée à plusieurs reprises, quatre soirs consécutifs à Philadelphie en mars 2016, mais aussi en Europe à Rotterdam comme à Bruxelles deux ans plus tard. Le présent enregistrement a été capté lors des concerts de Philadelphie qui commémoraient le centenaire de la première américaine de cet ouvrage sous la direction du très jeune Leopold Stokowski, en 1916, précisément dans la même ville et avec le même orchestre.
Bénéficiant des meilleurs solistes du moment, d’un effectif choral de grande qualité et du fameux « Philadelphia sound » de l’orchestre dont il est désormais le titulaire, Nézet-Seguin est à la tête d’un effectif de 400 chanteurs et instrumentistes. Tous ensemble, ils nous offrent une version très éloquente et sans boursouflure d’une œuvre oscillant entre symphonie, grande cantate et oratorio. © François Hudry/Qobuz
