Pour son quatrième album, Marina Lambrini Diamandis a décidé d’effacer les « diamants » de son nom d’origine (Marina And The Diamonds). Avec ce geste consolidant sa propre starification, la chanteuse galloise d’origine grecque semble donc installer une barrière entre elle et ses admirateurs (rappelons que les diamants en question se référaient aux fans de Marina). Le morceau Superstar pourrait d’ailleurs abonder dans ce sens. Mais lorsqu’on écoute attentivement Love + Fear, c'est un tout autre message qui se révèle. Car c’est plutôt l’amour de soi-même (dans le sens de « prendre soin de soi-même ») qui est au cœur de chansons énergiques et positives comme Handmade Heaven, Enjoy Your Life ou bien True. Musicalement, c’est toujours un mélange de mélodies redoutablement efficaces et d’arrangements synth-pop scintillants et dansants qui caractérise le style de Marina.
Conçu en deux parties (comme son titre l’indique clairement), l’album évoque dans un second temps les notions de peur et d’insécurité, formant un disque en forme de yin et yang. Et comme pour le thème de l’amour, Marina explore les forces émotionnelles véhiculées par la peur, dans des morceaux puissants tels que Life Is Strange ou Too Afraid. Love + Fear a été enregistré entre Londres, la Suède et Los Angeles avec notamment Noonie Bao (Charli XCX, Troye Sivan), Oscar Görres (Taylor Swift, Maroon 5) ou encore Justin Parker (Lana Del Rey, Bat For Lashes). Cet album comprend par ailleurs un duo avec le chanteur portoricain Luis Fonsi (mondialement célèbre grâce à son Despacito en 2017), dans une chanson qui a le mérite d’être à la fois caliente et mélancolique (Baby). © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
