« Le jazzman américain reste un exemple presque parfait de ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler un "musicien pour musiciens". Devenu aveugle à neuf ans, Lennie Tristano, auprès de qui de nombreux musiciens vinrent chercher leur nourriture musicale, concentre dans les Scenes and Variations une esthétique faite de longues phrases où abondent croches égales, subtiles variations rythmiques, polytonalité raffinée et block-chords dont la complexité atteint à la limite du cluster. Il fait preuve d'une incontestable virtuosité, d'une impressionnante capacité à phraser [...] Lennie Tristano est arrivé trop tôt et peut-être ne correspondait-il pas à ce que le public attendait. Son style rigoureux, janséniste, sans lyrisme et sans les apprêts permettant de plaire, ne pouvait connaître une réelle popularité. Mais quelques-uns de ses élèves, tels Lee Konitz et Warne Marsh, ainsi que ceux qu'il a influencés comme Art Pepper ou Bud Freeman, ont donné vie à la leçon de rigueur et d'inventivité bâtie par ce grand pianiste injustement "maudit".» (Classica, mars 2018 / Jean-Pierre Jackson)

Devenu aveugle à neuf ans, Lennie Tristano, auprès de qui de nombreux musiciens vinrent chercher leur nourriture musicale, concentre dans les Scenes and Variations une esthétique faite de longues phrases où abondent croches égales, subtiles variations rythmiques, polytonalité raffinée et block-chords dont la complexité atteint à la limite du cluster. Il fait preuve d'une incontestable virtuosité, d'une impressionnante capacité à phraser [...] Lennie Tristano est arrivé trop tôt et peut-être ne correspondait-il pas à ce que le public attendait. Son style rigoureux, janséniste, sans lyrisme et sans les apprêts permettant de plaire, ne pouvait connaître une réelle popularité.
