Dernier opus de la saga Doors avant l’overdose fatale de son chanteur durant l’été 1971 à Paris, L.A. Woman, enregistré fin 1970 en six jours au Workshop de Santa Monica Boulevard, où les Doors répétaient, montre une formation au sommet de son art. Jim Morrison, dont la voix s’est épaissie, chante comme un dieu et Ray Manzarek met le feu à ses claviers. Rien que la composition éponyme L.A. Woman est un nouveau tour de force stupéfiant, une cavalcade blues au bord de la transe… C’est d’ailleurs une fois de plus le blues qui suinte essentiellement de cette “femme angeleno” (magnifique reprise de Crawling King Snake de John Lee Hooker). Un blues évidemment singulier et propre aux Doors. Un blues climatique. Un blues vénéneux. Quant au légendaire Riders on the Storm qui referme ce dernier disque, son rythme organique qui communie avec la nature – on entend la pluie tomber et l’orage gronder –, il reste la plus belle ballade d’un ovni qui traversa l’histoire du rock en solitaire, loin des modes, loin du temps. Pour fêter son demi-siècle, la 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition de L.A. Woman propose une nouvelle remastérisation aux petits oignons signée de leur ingé-son fétiche Bruce Botnick ainsi que de nombreux bonus. Notamment des prises alternatives et des démos, comme celle de Riders on the Storm que les spécialistes pensaient définitivement perdue. Dans cette orgie d’inédits, on trouve également une démo de Hyacinth House enregistrée dans le home studio de Robby Krieger en 1969, et des versions alternatives de reprises de Junior Parker (Mystery Train), John Lee Hooker (Crawling King Snake), Big Joe Williams (Baby Please Don’t Go) et Lee Dorsey (Get Out of My Life Woman). © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
