Influencée par le reggae (Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff), la soul (Stevie Wonder), les chanteuses de jazz (Billie Holiday) et bien sûr la musique africaine de Fela Kuti et « King » Sunny Adé, Ayo est avant tout fidèle à l’idée d’une musique au son naturel. De façon symptomatique, lorsqu’elle évoque la musique des années 1970, dont elle est fan, elle estime que celle-ci reflète « plus d’émotions, de sensibilité que celle d’aujourd’hui, une musique bien plus froide, trop technique, trop synthétique [et] aime que le piano ait le son d’un piano, pas d’un synthétiseur ».
C’est cette sensibilité, cette émotion à fleur de peau qu’on retrouve sur les douze titres de Joyful, album enregistré en cinq jours dans des conditions « live en studio ». Des ballades accompagnées de paroles autobiographiques, dans lesquelles elle évoque l’Afrique, ses joies ses peines, ses bonheurs mais surtout l’amour. Elle le chante sous toutes ses formes, de sa voix sensuelle, légèrement dolente et cassée. Avec ce Joyful, Ayo accouche d’un album délicat, touchant, entre reggae et soul, qui rappelle par instants Lauryn Hill (« Down On My Knees »).
