Pourquoi enregistrer un énième Messie de Haendel, se demande Hervé Niquet, alors qu’il s’en trouve déjà plus d’une centaine sur le marché ? Et il répond : il est allé chercher, parmi les très nombreuses et fort différentes moutures qui existent de l’œuvre, la version très intéressante de 1754, à cinq solistes, remaniée pour être donnée au Foundling Hospital (Hôpital des enfants abandonnés, autrement dit : orphelinat) de Londres – un lieu où Haendel donnait Le Messie tous les ans depuis 1750. Il faut savoir que lorsque Haendel redonnait une nouvelle production avec de nouveaux artistes, il avait à sa disposition des solistes de niveau inégal. Il se dépêchait donc de remanier sa partition, l’adapter aux forces et aux faiblesses des un(e)s et des autres. Quand on se penche sur les différentes versions qui en sont nées, on remarque que des airs de soprano ont été transcrits au profit d’une alto, que tel air de basse est réduit de moitié – le chanteur du jour devait être un peu faible. On est en prise directe avec la réalité de Haendel producteur de ses propres œuvres. Précisons qu’à l’époque, pour vivre de sa musique, le compositeur, qui ne touchait aucun droit, devait absolument faire jouer ses œuvres et engranger un bénéfice sur la soirée. L’idée de ne pas retoucher son œuvre pour ne pas « l’abîmer » ou la dénaturer est une idée totalement contemporaine. Il doit exister une douzaine de versions du Messie ; celle de 1754 est rarement jouée parce qu’elle exige cinq solistes : deux sopranos, alto, ténor et basse.
