Peu de premiers albums hip-hop auront été aussi attendus que ce Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City, mais ce dernier n'en resterait pas moins une grande réussite sans cet effet d'attente, et ce grâce à une écriture captivante et un grand éventail d'illustres participants (Drake, Dr. Dre, MC Eiht) et de producteurs de haute volée (Pharrell, Just Blaze et Tabu). Kendrick Lamar y décrit une existence vécue comme si toute notoriété ou prospérité n'étaient que bonus, voyant ce "good kid" évoluer dans son quartier de Compton du haut d'une expérience et d'une sagesse impressionnantes pour son âge. Voyage en jungle urbaine valant le détour pour ses nombreuses richesses artistiques autant que pour l'esprit acéré de Lamar, Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City a l'étoffe de ces disques qui resteront sur le haut de la pile, tout effet de mode à part.
