Film score composer Michael Whalen heads up the music team for the soundtrack of the Forever Wild television series about the beauty of the U.S. national parks. Whalen's 14 original tracks feature the composer on synthesizers and other electronic/MIDI instruments, percussion, guitars, and voices. His selections also feature a live orchestra. The remainder of the tracks on the 2-CD set are drawn from existing albums by Narada artists: pianists Kostia and Michael Gettel; guitarists Eric Tingstad and Wayne Gratz, and keyboard artist David Arkenstone. The liner notes describe the parks in the series, but the notes do not link tracks to specific programs. Whalen's "The Dark and the Light" begins the album with penny whistle music that seems to usher in the dawn; a joyous rhythmic celebration -- with banjo -- follows. How delightfully American! Kostia's stately "American Fields" for solo piano follows; the piece has the stability of an old American hymn. Eric Tingstad's steel-string guitar presents a warm and tangy "Magnolia." Michael Gettel's "Shelter" for piano, keyboards, and wind sounds seems to describe steep canyon walls. "Peril in the Timberland" is a chilling composition by Whalen; the music seems to stalk around the trees counting down the minutes while the solo flute shudders fearfully. David Arkenstone's picturesque "Magic Forest" (from Quest of the Dream Warrior) sets the scene with tall crystalline tones, rumbling canyons, and voices crying in the wilderness. Many of pieces capture the essence of America; Whalen's "Times of Change" has a can-do spunk, while his "Hudson Valley" imagines the steadfastness of the Northeast character. Forever Wild is a satisfying album, whether approached as a sampler of Narada artists or as a musical reminder of the great character and splendor of our national parks.
