Seizième album pour le gentleman de la pop anglaise. Véritable légende vivante en Angleterre, Paul Weller promène sa silhouette longiligne depuis 1982, alors leader des Jam, puis du Style Council. Influence majeure de la nouvelle vague Britpop des années 90, Oasis et Blur en tête, le Modfather enchaîne les albums, les femmes et les enfants (pas moins de huit au compteur). Boulimique tout azimut, ce titre, Fat Pop (Volume 1), lui va finalement comme un gant. En moins de quarante minutes et douze chansons, Weller revisite pour une énième fois le songwriting pop, se frottant à tous les styles, toutes les genres… Résolument optimiste, l’ensemble est flamboyant, coloré, et les paroles définitivement positives. Ce n’est pas une pandémie mondiale qui va l'empêcher de se sentir bien et de chanter la vie à pleine dents ! Après un Cosmic Fringes tout en retenu et bien taillé sur les côtés, True explose, adoucit un instant par un sympathique saxophone, suivi du titre phare, Fat Pop, ludique à souhait et terriblement élégant, un morceau que l’on aurait pu entendre sur un album des Gorillaz de Damon Albarn… Plus Beatles, avec piano de rigueur, Shades Of Blue est une comptine plus classique dans la grande tradition pop anglaise… « Can you see the good things in your life ? » déclare d’ailleurs plus loin Paul Weller sur Cobweb / Connections, ballade familiale (choeurs et ambiance « tous ensemble »), esprit résolument ‘feel good’. Tout au long de l’album, on perçoit aussi les influences et inspirations de Weller, les esprits, de Curtis Mayfield à Traffic, sont bien là, au détour de chaque morceau, aussi bien dans la voix que dans les arrangements des morceaux. That Pleasure, par exemple, ressuscite toute la soul seventies, violons planants, virtuosité des percussions, riffs des guitares. À ce jeu-là, Weller excelle. Après dix titres formatés pastilles pop pétillantes, l'ex-Jam s’offre deux titres plus longs pour conclure le disque, lui donner un peu plus d’épaisseur, une réflexion un peu moins joyeuse sur In Better Times, et un sérieux presque héroïque sur Still Glides The Stream.
