Quelques mois après avoir posé ses doigts de fée sur le Nevermind de Nirvana, le producteur Butch Vig s’attaque à ce Dirty. En 1992, Sonic Youth n’est pas une bande de bleus et affiche déjà six albums à son compteur. Pour ce chapitre 7, les guitaristes Thurston Moore et Lee Ranaldo, oscillant entre six-cordes compactes et tsunami de disto sauvage, ne mettent pas d’eau dans leur vin et n’optent pas pour autant pour le « tout grunge » régnant, comme certains le diront à l’époque… Séquences angoissantes (Shoot), rock viscéral (100%), fausses ballades (Wish Fulfillment), électrochoc (Nic Fit), refrain flamboyant (Sugar Kane), compositions bicéphales (Orange Rolls, Angel’s Spit), rarement le gang new-yorkais n’aura aussi bien équilibré et digéré toutes ses marottes : rock avant-gardiste et expérimental, punk-rock frontal, mélodies assumées et feu d’artifice électrique.
