Voici un album qui mérite bien des noms d’oiseau ! Car le flûtiste à bec Stefan Temmingh et son ensemble The Gentleman’s Band ont rassemblé ici une belle poignée de pièces baroques tournant autour de tout une collection de volatiles : poule, rossignols allemands et italiens, coucous italiens et français, chardonneret… Autrement dit, nul besoin d’attendre Messiaen pour voir intégrer les chants d’oiseaux dans la musique, entre douceur pastorale, tendresse printanière et humour imitatif. La majorité des pièces ici présentées furent écrites d’emblée pour (ou avec) flûte à bec, tels que le merveilleux Il Giardinello de Vivaldi, quelques autres ont été adaptées à partir d’évidents parallélismes tels que Le Coucou de Daquin ou La Poule de Rameau, des morceaux initialement conçus pour clavecin seul.
