On ne peut pas dire que John Legend soit aussi attendu qu’il y a dix ou quinze ans. C’est peut-être ce qui le pousse désormais à tenter des choses à la croisée des genres. Avec ce septième album, Bigger Love, il s’essaie à mélanger la trap et la soul sur Ooh Laa, puis à reprendre ostensiblement la célèbre introduction de The Next Episode de Dr. Dre sur le titre Actions. En fait, dès le début de ce nouveau projet, il est clair qu’il n’y a aucune volonté d’innover.
C’est ce qui fait à la fois la qualité et la faiblesse de Bigger Love : John Legend semble être en préretraite. Il s’inspire d’artistes déjà un peu datés, comme lorsqu’il fait vocalement référence à Drake sur le titre éponyme. Il cherche à être actuel, mais sa maladresse laisse entrevoir une vraie sincérité dans le projet, comme s’il n’arrivait pas à changer. Le problème, c’est que si cela donne de très bons titres comme Remember Us, en duo avec Rapsody, ou le très soul Slow Cooker, on est aussi servis en balades mièvres.
