Souvent attribué à Beethoven, l’arrangement pour trio avec piano de sa Symphonie n° 2 en ré majeur est pourtant le fait de son ami et élève Ferdinand Ries, auquel le compositeur aurait donné son approbation. Fort de cette légitimité historique, le compositeur anglais Colin Matthews, qui n’en est pas à sa première transcription, s’est emparé de la Cinquième Symphonie du grand Ludwig pour la transformer elle aussi en trio. Rien d’iconoclaste dans cette démarche qui était fort courante à l’époque où l’on aimait faire de la musique entre soi.
Un tel programme est encore plus savoureux lorsque trois stars internationales décident de se réunir pour en donner leur propre vision. C’est ainsi que naquit cet album enregistré en août 2021 à Tanglewood, résidence d’été du Boston Symphony Orchestra. Dédié affectueusement au chef d’orchestre Michael Tilson Thomas, qui avait vivement encouragé cette initiative, l’enregistrement réunit le pianiste Emanuel Ax, le violoniste Leonidas Kavakos et le violoncelliste Yo-Yo Ma. Avec de tels interprètes, on est évidemment sur des sommets et tout questionnement quant à l’utilité d’un tel enregistrement paraît vain. Ils font tout simplement de la musique au plus haut niveau et pour notre plus grand plaisir, tout en renouvelant notre approche de deux chefs-d’œuvre inlassablement ressassés. © François Hudry/Qobuz
