Entre 1951 et 1955, Herbert Karajan enregistrait une première intégrale des Symphonies de Beethoven avec le Philharmonia de Londres, mais en mono. C’est avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Berlin — dont il était devenu le chef permanent en 1955 en remplacement de Wilhelm Furtwängler — qu’il réalisera en 1961-1962 le premier cycle stéréophonique moderne de ces Symphonies, publié par le label Deutsche Grammophon en 1963 ; le 15 octobre, il dirigeait la 9e Symphonie au concert inaugural de la Philharmonie de Berlin.
Suivie d’une deuxième intégrale également de haut vol, enregistrée de 1975 à 1977 et sortie en 1977, et d’une troisième captée entre 1982 et 1984 et sortie en 1985, toujours avec le Philharmonique de Berlin, celle de 1963 reste, dans son ensemble, la plus puissamment engagée et inspirée autant que techniquement remarquable, et l'un des grands sommets de la discographie du chef autrichien. La DG y avait englouti un budget exceptionnel de 1,5 million de marks en espérant en écouler au moins 100 0000 coffrets : en dix ans il s'en vendra 1 million ! © Qobuz / GG
