C’est un peu comme de la crème chantilly qu’on pourrait dévorer à la louche sans tomber malade, dans un monde parfait, où toutes les musiques seraient représentées à parité et où toutes les envolées baroques et grandiloquentes auraient un fond de vérité. Barcelona est en fait un disque tellement personnel (comme un rêve d’enfant, en fait) qu’il en devient difficilement de bon conseil. Freddie Mercury l’Indien souhaitait donc très fort chanter en compagnie de la Catalane Montserrat Caballé, et voilà qui est fait, dans un nuage de thé au jasmin.
Les compositions sont toutes riches d’une ampleur névrotique, qui peut parfois générer un fou rire hystérique mais rappelons que la chanson-titre est, depuis, devenu l’hymne officiel de la ville, ce qui positionne cette musique exactement là où elle se souhaite : dans les mouvements de foule joyeux et le déboutonnage des refrains, qu’on reprend ensemble dans la dignité.
Il est exact que tous les airs, même à la première écoute, rappellent systématiquement quelque chose, ce qui est, soit la preuve d’une authentique fibre populaire, soit la démonstration de la résurgence de quelques influences plus ou moins bien digérées. Mais cela n’a finalement pas plus d’importance que le drapé d’une robe de tulle ou la coupe d’un smoking bleu pétrole.
Pour le reste, Mercury, qui s’aventure dans l’univers de la musique classique, est plus performant que Caballé qui chante de la pop, ce qui ne constitue pas vraiment une surprise. Gageons que le chanteur de Queen, qui venait d’apprendre sa séropositivité, s’est senti heureux durant les sessions.

C’est un peu comme de la crème chantilly qu’on pourrait dévorer à la louche sans tomber malade, dans un monde parfait, où toutes les musiques seraient représentées à parité et où toutes les envolées baroques et grandiloquentes auraient un fond de vérité. Barcelona est en fait un disque tellement personnel (comme un rêve d’enfant, en fait) qu’il en devient difficilement de bon conseil. Freddie Mercury l’Indien souhaitait donc très fort chanter en compagnie de la Catalane Montserrat Caballé, et voilà qui est fait, dans un nuage de thé au jasmin.
Les compositions sont toutes riches d’une ampleur névrotique, qui peut parfois générer un fou rire hystérique mais rappelons que la chanson-titre est, depuis, devenu l’hymne officiel de la ville, ce qui positionne cette musique exactement là où elle se souhaite : dans les mouvements de foule joyeux et le déboutonnage des refrains, qu’on reprend ensemble dans la dignité.
Il est exact que tous les airs, même à la première écoute, rappellent systématiquement quelque chose, ce qui est, soit la preuve d’une authentique fibre populaire, soit la démonstration de la résurgence de quelques influences plus ou moins bien digérées. Mais cela n’a finalement pas plus d’importance que le drapé d’une robe de tulle ou la coupe d’un smoking bleu pétrole.
Pour le reste, Mercury, qui s’aventure dans l’univers de la musique classique, est plus performant que Caballé qui chante de la pop, ce qui ne constitue pas vraiment une surprise. Gageons que le chanteur de Queen, qui venait d’apprendre sa séropositivité, s’est senti heureux durant les sessions.
