En 2014, Freddie Gibbs, MC qui buzzait alors comme jamais, s’associait au beatmaker le plus culte et respecté de l’underground hip-hop, Madlib. L'Hoosier et le Californien de neuf ans son aîné signaient Piñata, un album puissant où chacun tirait parti des atouts de l’autre. Madlib n’avait par exemple jamais œuvré jusqu’ici sur des punchlines aussi gangsta/thug. A l’arrivée, sur ce disque blindé de featurings goûtus (Danny Brown, Raekwon, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, Scarface…), les instrus de Madlib épousaient les cambrures du flow moelleux de Gibbs qui rappelait celui de Tupac avec une réelle classe et une délicieuse saveur old school… Cinq ans plus tard, rien n’a vraiment changé avec leur impeccable seconde association si ce n’est les noms sur la guest list (Killer Mike de Run The Jewels, Pusha T, Anderson .Paak, Yasiin Bey alias Mos Def et Black Thought des Roots). Madlib digge un peu moins dans ses vinyles poussiéreux et modernise un brin ses productions. Reste une œuvre mature qui se fout des codes sonores de son temps et préfère peaufiner son propre art. Comment le reggae a conquis la pop américaine

Jamais le reggae n’avait été aussi exposé depuis Bob Marley. Depuis trois ans, les tubes des stars de la pop américaine ont pris des saveurs jamaïcaines. De Beyonce à Rihanna en passant par Drake, Ed Sheeran ou Justin Bieber, ils sont de plus en plus nombreux à avoir posé leur voix sur un morceau de dancehall, la version « club » du reggae popularisée par le légendaire producteur King Jammy au milieu des années 80 avec le Sleng Teng, le premier reggae électronique de l’histoire. Wu-Tang Clan : dans les couloirs de “36 Chambers”

Entre 1992 et 1994, le hip-hop new-yorkais vit une première renaissance, deux décennies après les premières block parties du DJ pionnier Kool Herc dans le South Bronx. “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)”, le premier album du Wu-Tang Clan, qui sort le même jour que “Midnight Marauders”, le 3e disque d'A Tribe Called Quest et moins de six mois avant “Illmatic” de Nas, est l'une des pièces maîtresses de ce deuxième âge d'or. Mais son histoire est le fruit d'une alchimie et d'une trajectoire bien plus complexes et aléatoires.
