La genèse de cette « Grand-Messe » demeure encore aujourd’hui en partie mystérieuse. Après avoir joué et enregistré pendant plusieurs années les Messes dites « luthériennes » (BWV 233 à 236) avec l’ensemble Pygmalion, Alpha propose ici la version primitive de la Messe en si mineur BWV 232, autrement dit la « cinquième Messe Brève », ne comportant que le Kyrie et le Gloria, portant donc l’appellation de Missa, et écrite en 1733 à l’intention du Prince électeur de Saxe installé à Dresde. Version presque inédite, cet enregistrement clôt le cycle des Messes Brèves de manière spectaculaire et confirme la qualité technique et artistique du jeune ensemble Pygmalion.
