Dans les mille vies du roi Presley, l’année 1969 marque un tournant. Même si John Lennon déclarera que « s'il n'y avait pas eu un Elvis, il n'y aurait pas eu les Beatles », le rock’n’roll n’appartient plus au King dans l’Amérique des 60's, où règnent les Fab Four mais aussi les Stones, Bob Dylan, les Beach Boys et consorts… Pourtant, en décembre 1968, c’est la résurrection ! Lors d’un one-man show diffusé sur la chaîne NBC, le King refait surface, plus classieux que jamais dans un costard moulant en cuir noir, entouré de ses fidèles amis-musiciens de la première heure, D.J. Fontana et Scotty Moore en tête, revisitant ses hymnes des débuts dans des versions parfaites et épurées, chantant divinement bien et osant même un peu d’autodérision. L’année suivante, Elvis surfe sur le succès de ce retour inespéré (Comeback Special) et décide d'enregistrer de nouvelles chansons dans des sonorités plus contemporaines. En janvier 1969, il met en boîte avec Chips Moman des titres magnifiques comme Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto, Don't Cry Daddy, Long Black Limousine, Inherit the Wind, Rubberneckin ou encore Without Love… Des sessions qui donneront les deux derniers chefs-d’œuvre discographiques du King : From Elvis in Memphis et From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis, qui paraissent en 1969.

Comme son titre l’indique, American Sound 1969 zoome sur cette parenthèse enchantée et la passe au scanner. Un copieux quintuple album de 90 titres mêlant prises master mais aussi démos, répétitions, raretés, inédites pour certaines, de ses sessions dans les studios American Sound de Chips Moman. C’est ce dernier qui a l’idée de réenraciner Elvis dans la soul, la country et le blues. Un King qui n’a pas décroché de hits depuis 1965, dépassé qu’il est par la génération montante, et qui prouve ici que son talent d’interprète est intact. Evidemment, cette somme maousse qui paraît en août 2019 est réservée aux aficionados de la star (neuf versions d’In the Ghetto et sept de You'll Think of Me !) qui se régaleront en assistant à la naissance, étape par étape, de chansons merveilleuses et parfois même bouleversantes. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Dans les mille vies du roi Presley, l’année 1969 marque un tournant. Même si John Lennon déclarera que « s'il n'y avait pas eu un Elvis, il n'y aurait pas eu les Beatles », le rock’n’roll n’appartient plus au King dans l’Amérique des 60's, où règnent les Fab Four mais aussi les Stones, Bob Dylan, les Beach Boys et consorts… Pourtant, en décembre 1968, c’est la résurrection ! Lors d’un one-man show diffusé sur la chaîne NBC, le King refait surface, plus classieux que jamais dans un costard moulant en cuir noir, entouré de ses fidèles amis-musiciens de la première heure, D.J. Fontana et Scotty Moore en tête, revisitant ses hymnes des débuts dans des versions parfaites et épurées, chantant divinement bien et osant même un peu d’autodérision. L’année suivante, Elvis surfe sur le succès de ce retour inespéré (Comeback Special) et décide d'enregistrer de nouvelles chansons dans des sonorités plus contemporaines. En janvier 1969, il met en boîte avec Chips Moman des titres magnifiques comme Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto, Don't Cry Daddy, Long Black Limousine, Inherit the Wind, Rubberneckin ou encore Without Love… Des sessions qui donneront les deux derniers chefs-d’œuvre discographiques du King : From Elvis in Memphis et From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis, qui paraissent en 1969.

Comme son titre l’indique, American Sound 1969 zoome sur cette parenthèse enchantée et la passe au scanner. Un copieux quintuple album de 90 titres mêlant prises master mais aussi démos, répétitions, raretés, inédites pour certaines, de ses sessions dans les studios American Sound de Chips Moman. C’est ce dernier qui a l’idée de réenraciner Elvis dans la soul, la country et le blues. Un King qui n’a pas décroché de hits depuis 1965, dépassé qu’il est par la génération montante, et qui prouve ici que son talent d’interprète est intact. Evidemment, cette somme maousse qui paraît en août 2019 est réservée aux aficionados de la star (neuf versions d’In the Ghetto et sept de You'll Think of Me !) qui se régaleront en assistant à la naissance, étape par étape, de chansons merveilleuses et parfois même bouleversantes. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Quarante-deux ans après sa mort, Elvis Presley demeure un précurseur inégalé. Mais si ses essentielles séances de 1954-1955 pour le label Sun restent la pierre angulaire du rock’n’roll, l’aura du King semble aujourd'hui s’estomper chez les plus jeunes au profit des Beatles, des Stones et autres Beach Boys. Et pourtant…

Woodstock, 50 ans après

Woodstock n’était pas le premier rassemblement dédié à la musique. A l’époque, Newport était déjà un rendez-vous régulier pour les amateurs de ce nouveau rock & folk qui inondait la jeunesse américaine – et d’ailleurs. Et les festivals de Monterey (Californie) ou l’Île de Wight (Royaume-Uni) avaient enflammé les deux étés précédents. Mais Woodstock, avec son côté sauvage et la foule d’artistes mythiques qui y ont défilé, fut bien le plus marquant d’entre tous. Si bien qu’un demi-siècle plus tard, on en parle encore avec les yeux qui brillent.

Stax, on dirait le Sud…

Motown au nord. Et Stax au sud. Deux conceptions bien distinctes de la soul music. Dans la moiteur sudiste de Memphis, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T. et quelques autres ont inventé un groove unique, biberonné au blues et surtout au gospel.
