Lorsque l’on parle d’un « album de transition », c’est généralement pour décrire un disque bancal, aux idées hasardeuses et/ou mal dégrossies. Sauf pour Nick Cave.

 

En effet, Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus, premier double album de l’histoire des Bad Seeds, est l’archétype même du disque de transition, avec un pied dans le passé et un autre dans le futur. Sa construction générale s’apparente d’ailleurs à un résumé de la carrière du groupe : un premier volet (Abattoir Blues) plutôt rock, direct et volontiers tapageur (à l’image du survolté « Get Ready for Love », tonitruante entrée en matière), et un second (The Lyre of Orpheus) plus calme, majoritairement composé de ballades à dominante acoustique. Voilà pour la partie « bilan ».

 

Quant au futur, l’album s’y projette par la force des choses : Blixa Bargeld étant parti, il s’agit, pour Nick Cave et ses hommes, de s’inventer de nouvelles perspectives. Là aussi, mission accomplie : des influences jusqu’alors insoupçonnées remontent à la surface (« Hiding All Away », qui ressemble à s’y méprendre à un inédit de John Cale, période Slow Dazzle ; « The Lyre Of Orpheus », blues cubiste à la Tom Waits, où l’on jurerait d’ailleurs entendre Marc Ribot ; ou encore « Let the Bells Ring », qui emprunte son chorus de guitare à Neil Young) et des adjectifs que l’on n’aurait jamais pensé utiliser pour décrire un disque de Nick Cave viennent naturellement à l’esprit à l’écoute de certains titres : « champêtre » et « printanier » pour le bucolique (!) « Breathless », « groovy » pour « Nature Boy » ou l’irrésistible « There She Goes, My Beautiful World ».

 

Mais là où Nick Cave se distingue vraiment de la masse, c’est que rien ici ne semble laborieux, incohérent ou inabouti. Au contraire, l’album présente une belle unité sonore, due en grande partie à une production remarquable, qui a la bonne idée de s’appuyer régulièrement sur un chœur gospel ayant le pouvoir de magnifier même les titres les plus faibles. Bien sûr, tout n’est pas parfait dans ce disque, et l’on songe parfois au chef-d’œuvre qu’il aurait pu être s’il avait été réduit à un album simple ; mais même ses longueurs témoignent finalement en sa faveur, puisqu’elles découlent d’une générosité et d’un plaisir de jouer que les Bad Seeds n’avaient plus montré depuis bien longtemps.

 

Bref, avec Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus, Nick Cave, cet infatigable iconoclaste, a inventé un genre nouveau : l’album de transition que l’on aime écouter. Un bien beau tour de force.

Descriptif de l'album

Lorsque l’on parle d’un « album de transition », c’est généralement pour décrire un disque bancal, aux idées hasardeuses et/ou mal dégrossies. Sauf pour Nick Cave.

 

En effet, Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus, premier double album de l’histoire des Bad Seeds, est l’archétype même du disque de transition, avec un pied dans le passé et un autre dans le futur. Sa construction générale s’apparente d’ailleurs à un résumé de la carrière du groupe : un premier volet (Abattoir Blues) plutôt rock, direct et volontiers tapageur (à l’image du survolté « Get Ready for Love », tonitruante entrée en matière), et un second (The Lyre of Orpheus) plus calme, majoritairement composé de ballades à dominante acoustique. Voilà pour la partie « bilan ».

 

Quant au futur, l’album s’y projette par la force des choses : Blixa Bargeld étant parti, il s’agit, pour Nick Cave et ses hommes, de s’inventer de nouvelles perspectives. Là aussi, mission accomplie : des influences jusqu’alors insoupçonnées remontent à la surface (« Hiding All Away », qui ressemble à s’y méprendre à un inédit de John Cale, période Slow Dazzle ; « The Lyre Of Orpheus », blues cubiste à la Tom Waits, où l’on jurerait d’ailleurs entendre Marc Ribot ; ou encore « Let the Bells Ring », qui emprunte son chorus de guitare à Neil Young) et des adjectifs que l’on n’aurait jamais pensé utiliser pour décrire un disque de Nick Cave viennent naturellement à l’esprit à l’écoute de certains titres : « champêtre » et « printanier » pour le bucolique (!) « Breathless », « groovy » pour « Nature Boy » ou l’irrésistible « There She Goes, My Beautiful World ».

 

Mais là où Nick Cave se distingue vraiment de la masse, c’est que rien ici ne semble laborieux, incohérent ou inabouti. Au contraire, l’album présente une belle unité sonore, due en grande partie à une production remarquable, qui a la bonne idée de s’appuyer régulièrement sur un chœur gospel ayant le pouvoir de magnifier même les titres les plus faibles. Bien sûr, tout n’est pas parfait dans ce disque, et l’on songe parfois au chef-d’œuvre qu’il aurait pu être s’il avait été réduit à un album simple ; mais même ses longueurs témoignent finalement en sa faveur, puisqu’elles découlent d’une générosité et d’un plaisir de jouer que les Bad Seeds n’avaient plus montré depuis bien longtemps.

 

Bref, avec Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus, Nick Cave, cet infatigable iconoclaste, a inventé un genre nouveau : l’album de transition que l’on aime écouter. Un bien beau tour de force.
