Amy Macdonald vise ici le grand public, mais sa voix gutturale offre une puissance suffisamment passionnée pour que A Curious Thing ne s’écoute pas non plus trop facilement. Enlevez le chant passionné de Macdonald de l'équation et A Curious Thing devient un album des plus coulants : ses surfaces brillent de netteté et les mélodies teintent suavement, qu’il s’agisse d’une ballade ou d’une chanson folk discrète. Si la production indique clairement que Macdonald cible un vaste public, ses chansons montrent également quelques signes de séquelles post-deuxième album : elle mentionne un peu trop ses démêlés avec la gloire dans ses textes.
